Surreal Amplification ><))>

Philippians 4-13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” From the time that I first began to play electric guitar, I have been searching for a specific tone and feel from an amplifier without having to put a half dozen toys in front of it. When you buy an amplifier, it should sound your way without having to go buy a bunch of other items. With clean, crunch and lead tones all at hand, and custom voicing available upon request, I feel I have acheived just that. I have only had one year of electronics so the fact that I was able to pull this off is truly a testament to the power of God in the life of a normal guy, who makes an honest attempt at seeking God and trying to find out how he wants to use me. We’ve all been given gifts. Many gifts, same spirit is in Ephesians I believe. There is a subject matter that we are comfortable talking about and this is the thing God wants us to use to be bold for him. Many of us have a hard time opening up myself included, but if someone strikes up a conversation about amplifiers and guitars and such, the door swings wide open and I get to tell them that anything interesting or beautiful that comes out of me is truly a gift and a demonstration of the power of Christ. Psalm 100 says, “Make a joyful noise…” Worship comes in many forms so play loud.

The V.M. 50 Triple Stage is an all tube signal path, 50-watt amplifier. This is an overview of the features and control layout.

Non-Master volume stage.
No compromise. No simulations. When you are running this amp in the non-master volume configuration, you have only two tube gain stages just like the original Marshalls® and Fenders®. Mix resistors and bypass caps can be customized to suite your needs. Amp comes stock with values I have chosen after many test runs with every different value I could think of. As with the original non-master volume amps, this setting gets nastier as the volume is cranked. Low to medium levels provide a relatively clean bluesy tone. Maxed out is brown tone city with EL34’s. There is a Post Phase Inverter Master Volume that can be used in this setting to create additional overdrive. Discussed in more detail later.

Master Volume stage.
This setting adds a tube gain stage and a master volume. The non-master volume control is removed from the circuit and a gain control is added. Your amp is now running three tube gain stages and the overall effect of this setting is a little hotter than a stock master volume amp. The Post Phase Inverter Master Volume works excellent in this setting to add power stage distortion into the mix. It really fattens up the overall sound without adding fake bass and mush.

Vintage Modern stage.
This setting adds yet another tube gain stage to the party. Now you are entering the realm of hot-rodded and modded, boutique amp heaven. It’s called the Vintage Modern setting due to the fact that the vintage tone is retained but the gain is over the top. The clarity is there. The note definition and punch is all there. This is an extremely detailed and well thought out gain circuit that has come about after years of reading and experimenting with different resistor capacitor combinations. It’s not some add a tube and hope I t works out kinda thang, like the mid-eighties amp hacker days. The integrity of your instrument is retained even when using huge amounts of the available gain.

The Tone Network.
The tone network is familiar. There is treble, middle, bass and presence. There is a Slope Control three-position selector. The three positions are 10k, 33k and 56k. The 10k is a value chose after noticing some of the newer, gainier amps had very low slope resistor values. The lower value allows more of the signal to flow toward the bass and mid capacitors causing a bigger, less treble sounding effect. The 33k is like the super leads and master volume marshals. The 56k has an older feel to it. It adds more treble and shifts the bass frequencies. The original Bassmans and JTM45’s used a 56k slope resistor. You get to decide how you want it. The presence control has a slightly wider range than most presence controls just in case you need more bite. The half way point on this control is equivalent to the full position on most.

The Attn. control.
This is an additional master volume added after the phase inverter section (the presence circuit) of the amp. This feature brings the Phase Inverter into the gain structure of the amp and allows a completely new range of overdrive flavors. You can get a thicker, richer tone using this feature. Works best with EL34’s. Technically, the phase inverter is part of the power section and when people refer to power section distortion, they aren’t just talking about the power tubes. Although the power tubes do offer a small amount of breakup, and they create a feel that can’t be made in the preamp, the majority of the overdrive effect that you here is still from the preamp and the phase inverter section working together.

Treble/Bass Switch.
This switch controls the cathode of the first gain stage. If you run in non-master volume setting, you can choose between loudness 1 (treble channel) or loudness 2 (bass channel). The difference is just like the difference between the 4 inputs on a non master. One is brighter than the other. Optional upon request, if you prefer, you may have your amp designed to blend the bright and normal just like using a jumper cable. The trade off would be no master volume option.

The Back Panel has several features as well and may have one or two plugged 1/4" holes for future improvments or modifications.

Line Out
This is a standard line out tapped off the output transformer. An additional control may be added upon request. The line out is a great feature for using your entire amp as a preamp. Then send it to an effects processor then and additional stereo power-amp and you have a killer wall of sound.

Speaker Outs
There are two speaker outputs and a standard ohm selector switch. 4, 8, or 16.

Footswitch jack
Standard short to ground switch is now used to switch channels and boost functions

Effects Loop
This effects loop is the most professional sounding, useful effects loop I have ever heard. It’s an all tube, parallel loop with a send level and return level. The send level acts like a blend control. More clockwise, more effects. Less Clockwise, more dry signal. There is no change in volume just the effect level. My loop is a slightly modified version of Larry Amplifications loop. Permission has been given by Larry himself and there will be a donation made to Larry Amplification for every amp sold that has this loop.
